Personality
Jiji is an energetic and expressive young man who often conveys his emotions through exaggerated movements and facial expressions. He has a habit of ending his sentences with quirky verbal tics, such as “Fuuuu” (フゥ, translated as “Woo”) or “Fuuuuwaaaatsu” (フゥワッ, translated as “Woo-Hoo-Hoo”), adding to his animated demeanor.
His lively personality, combined with his good looks, makes Jiji both amusing and charming to some of the girls at his school. However, his exuberant nature can also be perceived as irritating by others. Seiko Ayase, in particular, finds Jiji’s eccentric behavior somewhat foolish, often referring to him as a “genius” in a sarcastic manner, highlighting her mixed impressions of his character.
Jiji is often perceived as having a “playboy” vibe due to his flirtatious behavior and confident demeanor. Upon introducing himself to Momo Ayase’s classmates, he enthusiastically asked a female classmate for her cellphone number after finding her cute at first glance. He also displayed a playful and flirtatious attitude around Momo’s friends, reinforcing this impression.
Despite his flirtatious tendencies, Jiji is genuinely kind-hearted. After reuniting with Momo following years of separation, he sincerely apologized for teasing her when they were children, demonstrating his maturity and remorse for his past actions. His protective nature was evident when he intervened to shield Momo from an anatomical model that had come to life and was charging toward her, showcasing his willingness to put himself in harm’s way to protect those he cares about.
Background
During his childhood, Jiji was friends with Momo Ayase and unknowingly became her first crush. Their friendship was strained after Momo began following her grandmother Seiko Ayase’s instructions to perform a daily ritual. Unaware of its significance, Jiji rudely mocked Momo for her actions, which created a rift between them. Shortly after this incident, Jiji and his parents moved to the mountains, causing him to lose touch with Momo as they grew apart.
At some point, Jiji began noticing strange occurrences around his house. However, after his parents dismissed his concerns, he chose to ignore the incidents despite his growing unease. The situation escalated when Jiji encountered a spirit within his home, which began appearing everywhere he went, including in his dreams. This constant presence led to severe sleep deprivation, affecting both his physical and mental well-being. Shortly after these encounters, Jiji’s parents fell ill and were hospitalized, suggesting a connection between the spirit’s presence and their sudden sickness.
With no other option, Jiji’s family sought the help of well-known spirit mediums to perform an exorcism. However, their efforts ended in failure, with three of the five mediums tragically committing suicide after confronting the spirit. Following these events, the remaining mediums advised Jiji that hiring Seiko Ayase would be their last resort. Acting on this recommendation, Jiji reached out to Seiko for help with his situation and was granted permission to move into her home until the spirit haunting him could be dealt with.
Abilities and Powers
Supernatural Abilities
Spiritual Awareness

Jiji gained the ability to see spirits after his encounter with the Evil Eye in his former home. This heightened spiritual awareness allows him to perceive supernatural entities that are invisible to ordinary individuals.
Ki
Jiji possesses an exceptionally large reserve of ki, with his spiritual power being considered both rare and highly desirable among evil spirits. Following his training with Seiko, Jiji learned to harness his ki to suppress the Evil Eye sealed within him. This suppression is triggered by coming into contact with something cold, allowing him to momentarily control the yokai’s influence. However, Jiji noted that maintaining this control requires him to exert his full strength, which leaves him physically exhausted afterward, limiting the duration and frequency with which he can use this ability.
Techniques
Ha Wave (波ーツ Ha-tsu)

Jiji has the ability to channel his ki outward, creating an invisible burst of force capable of knocking back anything in its path. To perform this technique, he first concentrates on directing his ki into his hands, then thrusts them forward while keeping his palms cupped. Known as the Ha Wave, the technique’s primary strength lies in its ability to knock back targets, allowing Jiji to attack opponents from both short and long range.
However, as noted by Aira, the Ha Wave lacks the offensive power needed to inflict significant damage, making it more effective as a defensive maneuver or for creating distance rather than as a finishing move.
Evil Gun (邪銃 Jagan)

An enhanced version of the Ha Wave powered by the Power of Words, where Jiji increases its attack strength by shouting “Evil Gun”. This activation transforms the technique into a concentrated beam of energy that shoots out from his hands with greater force and precision. Jiji first used this ability to attack one of the space globalists who was restraining Aira, successfully breaking their hold and freeing her from captivity.
Power of Words (言霊 Kotodama)
After discovering from Momo that verbalizing attacks can enhance their power, Jiji began applying this technique to his spiritual abilities. By combining his words with his ki, he was able to amplify the strength of his attacks, overcoming the lack of offensive power that had previously limited his effectiveness in combat. This integration of speech and energy allowed Jiji to deliver more impactful strikes, making his techniques more formidable in battle.
Etymology
- The name Jin (仁) carries the meaning of “compassionate,” reflecting qualities of kindness and empathy.
- His surname, Enjoji (円城寺), is composed of three kanji characters: “en” (円), meaning “circle,” “yen,” “round,” or “money”; “jo” (城), meaning “castle”; and “ji” (寺), meaning “temple.” Together, the name evokes imagery of strength, stability, and tradition, symbolizing a connection to both protective fortitude and spiritual grounding.
Trivia
- The activation and reversal of the Evil Eye’s curse affecting Jiji, which is triggered by exposure to hot or cold substances, bears a notable resemblance to the conditional curse of Ranma Saotome, the protagonist of Ranma ½. In Ranma ½, Ranma transforms into a female when splashed with cold water, while hot water is the only way to restore his male form.
- This parallel became evident when Jiji himself acknowledged the similarity by singing the first few lyrics of “Don’t Make Me Wild Like You”, the first opening theme of Ranma ½, upon discovering the condition of his curse.
- Additionally, despite having known Seiko since childhood, Jiji did not realize that she was actually Momo’s grandmother until the two reunited years later, highlighting the unexpected nature of their connection.
Notes
- Jiji is a second-year student at Kami High, indicating that he is likely between the ages of 16 and 17.
