Personality

Rin is a kind, caring, and respectful young girl who is dedicated to fulfilling her duties. As the class representative of Class C, she genuinely cares about her classmates’ well-being and wants to be someone they can rely on for help or advice. She is not afraid to be assertive when it comes to defending her classmates. Rin’s compassionate nature and sense of duty go back to her childhood, where she would take care of her grandmother, who was bedridden, and handle household chores to ease the burden on her mother, who worked outside the home, even if it meant sacrificing time with her friends.

Rin has a deep passion for vampire romance fiction and dreams of becoming a novelist, one day writing her own story in that genre. Additionally, she has a very vivid imagination and often gets lost in her thoughts, imagining unlikely vampire-related scenarios. This sometimes leads to her speaking aloud the thoughts running through her head without realizing it. When someone nearby hears her and points it out, Rin becomes embarrassed and assumes they must have the ability to read minds, jumping to the conclusion that they are a vampire. This tendency is especially noticeable when she encounters unexpected situations, like meeting Turbo Granny, the talking stuffed cat. She even mistakenly assumes Turbo Granny is male due to her crude language. Rin also has a habit of swooning over many of these “vampires” she imagines.

Background

As a child, Rin was responsible for taking care of her bedridden grandmother while her mother was at work. In elementary school, Rin impressed her classmates by showcasing her singing talent, which caught the attention of a girl named Mai Kawabanga. Mai believed that together they could become idols and encouraged Rin to join her in preparing for an upcoming junior idol audition. Although Rin agreed to practice with Mai, her mother reminded her of the responsibility she had to care for her grandmother when she was away. Faced with this dilemma, Rin reluctantly told Mai and her friends that she would need to skip the auditions to fulfill her duties at home. Mai’s friends misunderstood this as an excuse, thinking Rin was lying and that her mother was simply lazy. Feeling hurt by the situation, Rin made a statement that she didn’t believe there was any value in becoming idols, which led Mai to view her as a traitor. As a result, their friendship came to an end.

Usage

Rin used her ability to bring the captives trapped in Danmanra back to the real world by levitating their figurines out of the cursed trunk. Through her control over gravity, she was able to lift the figurines and restore them to their proper place.

Etymology

• Rin’s surname, Sawaki, can be translated as “assisting supporting role” or, more unflatteringly, “assisting armpit.”
• Rin’s first name, Rin, can mean both “strict” and “elegant,” which aligns well with her role as the class representative.

• In chapter 9, a girl from Class C, whose hairstyle resembles Rin’s when viewed from the back, is seen sitting at a desk while Momo inquires with two students about Okarun’s whereabouts.
